The CL2 is supplied with a 12-hour Bluetooth neckband – compatible with high-fidelity aptX™ streaming – as well as a braided copper cable 3.5mm, and balanced, silver-coated 2.5mm cable.
The housings are moulded from ceramic – a compound called zirconium dioxide with applications that include synthetic diamond and industrial heat-resistance. This makes them extremely blemish-resistant, aesthetically beautiful, and ideal for transmitting audio from driver to ear without distortion.
Using universal connections – MMCX – the CL2’s housings are usable with other detachable cables; and the cables are usable with any other detachable housings.
It is built around the most compact planar magnetic driver ever engineered – a 10mm transducer containing a perfectly concentric magnet array, a planar coil, and a 16µm diaphragm.
What is a planar magnetic driver?
Planar magnetic technology is one of the most revered methods of sound reproduction in audio – difficult both to construct and to miniaturise. A zone of perfect magnetic balance (a ‘magnetic plane’, hence the name (and pronunciation)) is formed using opposing magnetic fields. On this is balanced a planar coil – a copper coil in the shape of a helix – and a diaphragm – a super-thin circle of material designed to push air and create sound. As the audio from your phone, player or computer reaches the coil, it reacts to the magnetic field; moving back and forth and creating sound waves.
How is that different from a standard driver?
Conventional dynamic drivers use a single ring coil to create sound – using a solid plane results in a huge step up in control and response; and a massive drop in distortion. This is particularly important for more complex, detailed music that moves across the dynamic range; using treble and harmonics alongside deep bass.
How is this new?
This technology has never before been miniaturised to the extent where it can fit inside an in-ear headphone housing.
It has never been used with Bluetooth wireless technology in this configuration.
